Working with Funeral Homes

How catering coordinates with a funeral home’s own timeline and space.

When a reception is held at, or arranged through, a funeral home, catering usually needs to work around a schedule the funeral home controls rather than one the family sets independently.

It helps to ask the funeral home directly whether they allow outside catering, whether they have a preferred delivery window, and whether their space has refrigeration or warming capability. Some funeral homes are set up to receive trays and platters directly; others expect food to arrive fully ready to serve with no on-site preparation at all.

Coordinating delivery time is often the most important detail. A service’s length can shift on the day, so a caterer who’s used to working with funeral homes will usually build a little flexibility into the delivery window rather than insisting on an exact minute.

It’s also worth clarifying who the caterer should speak to on the day — the family, the funeral home’s own coordinator, or both — so that any last-minute questions about timing or setup go to the right person without the family having to relay messages.

We coordinate directly with funeral homes on timing and delivery details whenever that’s helpful, so the family isn’t stuck managing that piece themselves on top of everything else.
