Outdoor Gatherings

Planning notes for a celebration of life held outdoors.

An outdoor celebration of life — in a garden, a park, or a backyard — has its own set of planning questions that don’t come up with an indoor venue.

Weather is the obvious one, and it’s worth having a backup plan even for a date that looks fine on the forecast: a tent, a covered patio, or a nearby indoor space as a fallback keeps the day from being derailed by a single rain shower.

Food safety matters more outdoors, particularly in warm weather. Cold platters need to stay cold and hot food needs to stay hot for longer than an indoor reception might require, which can affect what menu items make sense and how they’re packaged for transport and holding.

Practical logistics — power access for warming equipment, a flat surface for serving tables, and protection from wind or insects — are worth walking through with whoever’s hosting before finalizing a menu.

Simpler, sturdier menu formats tend to work best outdoors: platters and boxed items generally travel and hold better outside than a delicate plated hot meal.

If you’re planning an outdoor gathering, mention that when you request a quote — it changes some of our recommendations around packaging and timing, even though the menu options themselves stay the same.
