Church Reception Planning

What’s different about catering a reception in a church hall.

Church halls are one of the most common settings for a celebration of life reception, and they come with a few planning considerations that are a little different from a private venue.

Many church halls have a working kitchen, but it may be shared with regular congregation activities, meaning access and equipment can vary week to week. It’s worth confirming directly with the church what’s available — a stove, a fridge, warming trays — rather than assuming.

Volunteer involvement is common in church settings. Some congregations have their own reception committee or volunteers who help set up and serve; if that’s the case, it’s worth telling your caterer so food arrives in a format that’s easy for volunteers to lay out, rather than assuming professional service staff will be on hand.

Timing around the service itself matters here too — many churches expect the reception to begin shortly after the service ends, in the same building, which usually means food needs to be set up and ready to serve before the service concludes.

Dietary and cultural considerations can also come up more in a church setting, particularly for congregations with specific traditions — it’s worth mentioning any of these to your caterer when you book.
